Secondlight, Microsoft’s New Surface Prototype

barence writes “microsoft has literally added another dimension to its touchscreen table technology interface. the remodelled edibles projects an mental picture at the end of one’s tether with the shelve itself, so that any translucent material (such as tracing distribute or perspex) held above the surface screen displays a different spitting image to what you note on the table’s display. this means you can have a satellite allusion of a town on the table, and have the street names projected on to a piece of paper that the owner holds insusceptible to the map. or you could have a photo of a car, with the tracing report displaying images of its innards.”

Looking For A New Leader

clemson — from his vantage question as a make a getaway on the locker-room wall, terry don phillips figured he had hired either a lunatic or the suitable crew for the benefit of the undertaking.

phillips, oklahoma state’s athletics director at the time, listened with admitted skepticism as first-year coach les miles told his team it was wide to upset unbeaten no. 4 oklahoma on the road in the 2001 likeable-ripen finale.

the cowboys knocked the sooners out of the conference title game with a 16-13 delight and then stunned their third-ranked rivals again the next season, fleshing out a resume miles would parlay into the lsu trade.

clemson fans are hanging their hat on the hope phillips, in his seventh year as the tigers’ athletics director, can tap into his instincts to survive another home-run hire.

while miles stands as the definitive rate of his career as an athletics leader, an enquiry of phillips’ track privately shows hits and misses.

The Bulldog Report

Tuesday proved to be a high-water mark on the Mexico High School fall sports calendar with the Lady Bulldogs posting varsity victories in 4 different sports. Included was a split of a softball doubleheader with NCMC rival Hannibal at Gallop Field, Mexico winning Game 1 11-7 and losing the second 8-2. More information on MHS softball outcome will appear in Thursday’s Ledger.MHS VOLLEYBALL: The Lady Bulldogs snapped a 2-match varsity losing streak, making sure it wouldn’t become a season-long 3, with Tuesday’s 25-12, 25-18 knockout of NCMC rival Kirksville, a first-year program, at the MHS sports complex. “Last week, our girls came off a tough loss against Hannibal (13-25, 10-25). We simply weren’t playing to win, beating oursevles with too many unforced errors,” MHS coach Rachel Leu said. “We played a more intensive game Monday against Helias (13-25, 9-25); the score isn’t a true reflection of how hard the girls played. We had some really good rallies and came up with some good defensive plays. “The past 2 nights gives us momentum for Thursday’s game at home against Bowling Green,” she added. Against the Tigers, Mexico got 7 aces from Khala Fowler and 3 kills from Amanda Nickoley on offense, plus 10 digs apiece from Nickoley and Katherine Wortmann and 2 solo blocks by Erika Miller on defense. The JV Lady Bulldogs continued their improvement, posting their second win 25-21, 25-12 over Kirksville.MHS GOLF: The Lady Bulldogs pulled off a victory at the expense of a big-name opponent with Tuesday’s 220-224 triumph over Hickman at the Mexico Country Club. ““It was a great day for golf. We had beautiful weather, a nice course and a great opponent. Hickman beat us earlier this year, so it was our turn to return the favor while at our home course,” MHS coach Lindsey Yancey said. “This really was an exciting win, one that we were not expecting. “This was not our best day of golf, but we have continued to be consistent (shooting) in the low 200s,” she added. Mexico’s Shea Colley earned medalist honors with her 44 for 9 holes. Ashten Travis followed at 54, Ashley Bridgford 60, Kelsay Spurling 62 and Sydney Beauchamp 75 for the 3-5 Lady Bulldogs. Low score for the Kewpies was 51 by Bea DeCastro.MHS TENNIS: Another 6-3 final ended in Mexico’s favor Tuesday as the Lady Bulldogs completed a sweep of their home-and-away series with Palmyra with an identical score from their previous meeting, but this time on the road. “We got some close matches to go our way a couple of times and it was a good showing by our girls,” MHS coach Jim Graham said. “Sydney Stamy was a double winner in singles and doubles for the first time this season, and Abby Orscheln and Allison Swopes both played great singles matches and got the win.” Singles saw Stamy avenge last week’s 8-10 loss to Kelli Fuller with a dominating 10-2 decision. Also for 3-7 Mexico, Brooke Doolittle beat Alana Stansberry 10-5, Becki Hamlett lost to Courtney Cox 5-10, Orscheln beat Katie Dames 11-9, Swopes beat Jessica Martin 11-10 (7-5 TB) and Nadine Bogdon lost to Jordan Meyer 4-10. Mexico doubles results were Stamy-Doolittle defeating Stansberry-Cox 10-4, Hamlett-Orscheln beating Fuller-Dames 10-8 and Bogdon-Swopes falling to Martin-Meyer 8-10. In exhibition matches for Mexico, Monica Rothermich-Liesl Walser won 9-7, Veda Crouch-Carrie Finck lost 5-8, Ravin Palmer-Christina Smith won 8-6 and Karli Tumbleson-Emily Pratt lost 3-8.MHS SOCCER: Tuesday at NCMC rival Hannibal, the Bulldogs gave up 3 goals in the first half of a 5-0 varsity setback. “Even so, this was once again an improvement for our club. Once we start to play more consistent game in and game out, we will start to be in more games,” MHS coach Bryan Keim said. “We kind of play at the level of our opponent instead of playing our game at 100 percent,” he continued. “This time we were successful at moving the ball, we created some opportunities on offense and almost converted. We just need to keep our heads up on what we can control as a team and that’s to progressively become a better soccer program.” Casey Bedford was in goal for 3-7 Mexico and made 10 saves. No. 9 player of the game for the Bulldogs was Danny Rivera. In the JV match, it was 1-0 Hannibal at the half in a 3-0 final. Logan Ray was the No. 9 player of the game for 2-4 Mexico.MMS GRADE 8 FOOTBALL: Falling behind 14-0 at halftime against the Southern Boone A-team, the B-team Bulldogs eventually wound up bowing 32-0 Tuesday at Ashland. “Our kids played hard and nobody got hurt. That’s about all you can say about the game,” MMS coach Dave Okenfuss said. “I think the outcome would have been …

Handicapping the Chase Drivers: Dover International Speedway

Okay, so last week I was completely wrong about Greg Biffle. I summed up his chances at Loudon with one word: “Yikes.”

I was about right with Jimmie Johnson, Carl Edwards, Jeff Burton, and Dale Earnhardt Jr., the rest of the top five, but I completely blew it on Biffle. Sorry, folks. I guess four out of five ain’t bad, though, right?

Staying on the lead lap is more important at Dover than almost anywhere else: in the three Car of Today races at the track, the last car on the lead lap averages a finish of 8.3.

In this race last year, and also this spring, only six cars stayed on the lead lap. Simply put, if you can’t stay on the lead lap, you can’t win.

Here’s what to expect from each of the 12 drivers this week at Dover:

1. Carl Edwards: Of all Chase drivers at Dover, Edwards’ average finish is the best, at 8.2. He leads all drivers in the COT era at the track with 510 points. He hasn’t finished out of the top 15 since Chicagoland at mid-July, and his worst finish at the track in his career is 18th in 2004, his sixth career Sprint Cup start. This one should be a no-brainer.

2. Jimmie Johnson: Even if he hasn’t won at the track since 2005, there’s still something to be said for sweeping the events at a track in your rookie season. That’s exactly what Johnson did at Dover in 2002. Even if his momentum may be slightly decreased after losing at Loudon in the final laps, Johnson has eight top 10s at Dover, with an average finish of 12th in the COT. A top 10 finish is highly plausible.

<img src=”http://ad.doubleclick.net/ad/onpitrow.fsv/ros;sect=ros;fantasy=no;game=no;tile=3;sz=300×250;ord=’+random_number+’?” border=”0″ height=”250″ width=”300″ alt=”nascar on pit row” />

3. Greg Biffle: When your average finish at a track is 5.4 since 2005, and 3.7 in the COT era, you’re a safe pick. When you’re coming off of a win in the first race of the Chase, you’re a safe pick. When you’re second in points all-time at a track in the COT era, only 10 points behind the leader, you’re a safe pick. And most importantly of all, when the writer feels stupid about missing on you, the race winner, completely last week, you’re a mandatory pick. Da Biff will step up again at Dover.

Salt City Brew Club
Web site for the Salt City Brew Club located in Syracuse New York month will hold a discourse on a pre-selected topic of general brewing interest.

4. Dale Earnhardt Jr.: Junior finished third in this race last year, and won here in 2001 (remember “Wilson”?), but there hasn’t been too much to speak of since then. Junior has led two laps at Dover since 2004. Granted, his 35th place run earlier this year was a result of an early accident, and some say that Junior could outrun the leaders even with the damage on his car. But an average finish of 18.2 in the three years prior does not bode well. Expect a decent run, but don’t bank on a top finish.

5. Jeff Burton: Burton has only failed to complete three laps at Dover since 2005. His average finish in that time is an exceptional 7.9. Although two of his lapped finishes came in the past two races at the track, he came in seventh and eighth, respectively, in those two events. Burton will be solid, if not spectacular, come Sunday.

6. Denny Hamlin: Denny is a bit of an unknown at Dover. In his first three races at the track, his average finish was a solid 8.0. But in his past two races, he’s fallen victim to accidents and has an average finish of 40.5. Take note of the fact that Hamlin has only led 61 laps in a Sprint Cup car at Dover, but they all came in the first of those two wrecks. Also of note, Hamlin has only completed 16 race laps at Dover in a Toyota. High risk can equal high reward, however, so choose wisely.

7. Tony Stewart: Smoke has wrecked in three of his last four Dover starts. From his rookie season until 2004, he was a beast at Dover, with a worst finish of 11th in 12 starts, but since then it’s been all downhill. Stewart’s due for a win, but he hasn’t won at Dover since he swept the track in 2000. Seeing Stewart’s old self at Dover is a distinct possibility, but one never knows how long a streak of bad luck at any one track can last; remember how long it took Dale Earnhardt to win a Daytona 500.

TSA Screeners Get New Clothes, New Attitude, and…

reader russ dewey points us to this chicago tribune story about transportation security furnishing airport screeners getting hip duds, unveiled on today’s anniversary of the 9/11 attacks:

The goal is to give screeners a more professional appearance and establish a greater air of authority, in an effort to command respect from travelers….

Freestyle rap battle translated

Near a security checkpoint Thursday morning at O’Hare, Annie Gregg, 23, a transportation security officer from Midlothian who has been working at the TSA for a year, agreed that the uniforms would improve morale, saying they look “a lot sharper” than the old ones.Screener Robert Jennings, 40, of Streamwood, a 6-year TSA veteran, reflected on his position’s importance on the seventh anniversary of the attacks.”It’s part of me helping out my country,” Jennings said.

More here.

We all like to get new clothes, but I’d be a lot more interested in hearing that the TSA is actually trying to figure out why its employees suck so hard at their jobs. It was only a month ago that we were treated to stories based on a Government Accountability Office study of TSA screeners:

A government program to find gaps in airport screening is “a waste of money” because it doesn’t follow up on why screeners failed to spot guns, knives and bombs on undercover agents, the head of the House Homeland Security Committee says.

A Government Accountability Office report obtained by USA TODAY says Transportation Security Administration inspectors posing as passengers do not record why individual screeners failed to spot weapons. The TSA ran 20,000 covert tests at the USA’s 450 commercial airports from 2002 to 2007, and the results ought to be used to improve screening, the report says….

House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., plans a hearing next month to press the TSA on making better use of covert tests.

“You have a system that’s supposed to strengthen airport security, but you don’t use the results of the tests to do exactly what you’re doing the tests for,” Thompson said. “It’s obviously a waste of money.”

More here.

Read reason‘s 2004 cover story, “Dominate. Intimidate. Control.: The sorry record of the Transportation Security Administration.”
